Though they can be raced anywhere, they’re primarily designed to be run on a track. Hot Wheels are exactly what you’d expect from a toy car - generally consisting of a plastic or metal body/chassis and wheels that allow it to be raced around by a toddler or young child’s hand. Hot Wheels was designed as the competitor to Matchbox, the difference with the former having their cars based more so on fantasy design, rather than being smaller incarnations of production cars. Understandably, with Mattel - the company behind the Hot Wheels franchise - being American-based, those of you outside the US probably aren’t as familiar with the brand. It would have been nice to relive the nostalgia. It’s kind of a shame that I never kept any of this stuff as I grew up. ![]() Even without a track kit, getting the cars themselves were a blast I’d take a few out to the back deck of the house and ride those along the railing with great enthusiasm. There was another kit that I had, which I think was a car wash thingy? As well as some other kits that unfortunately have escaped my memory. It was fascinating to see that as a child. That car would loop around the track, hit the accelerator, and just keep going until the accelerator was turned off. Once the toy car touched it, it would go flying with great speed, enough that it could go around an upside-down loop without falling. I remember one track that I constructed that, even though it was simple in design, it had one of those accelerator things where the car starts. ![]() I’d eagerly take that set of tracks home and, with the help of some of my older brothers, we put it together. Others he was willing to get, even though it might not have been as nice as the other. The better they were, the more money my Dad gave me to treat myself. Every quarter when I got my report card from school, I was that giddy child that always looked forward to seeing what my grades were. Hot Wheels Unleashed is available via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Do not boost at the start of a drift or during a drift, as you’ll likely lose control. If a car is ahead of you, you’ll likely pass them down, or at least get a lot closer. But, the main technique is to exit the drift with a quick burst of boost. Again, refer to the boost guide for extra details. Adjusting your vehicle by nudging the control stick and using rapid taps of the brake will all help control the flow of the drift.ĭrift exit: A successful drift not only looks cool but is also the primary way to refill your vehicle’s boost. Turning too wide will cause the vehicle to slam into the opposite wall, resulting in an even greater loss of speed. Turning too sharply into it will cause you to lose speed. Use the control stick to nudge the front wheels along the curve try to keep your turn shallow, but not too shallow.įlow with the drift: By closely following the line, the vehicle will smoothly glide around the corner, even if it’s very tight. This will cause the rear wheels of the vehicle to swing in the opposite direction of the turn. The key to counteracting this in Hot Wheels Unleashed seems to be a technique called drift tapping.ĭrift start: Begin the drift by gently tapping the brake button (left trigger and then immediately pressing the control stick in the direction of the turn. Here, the vehicles maintain a good bit of their momentum once the drift begins, which is great for speed, but that makes proper drift control and exit a little more tricky. Rather, it’s kind of an odd mixture of both. It’s not as simplified as some other arcade racers, but it’s definitely not as realistic as more sim-oriented titles. The physics of Hot Wheels Unleashed are a bit exotic. However, once you get the hang of it, races will become a lot easier to win and feel intensely more satisfying to play through. Mastering the drifting mechanics of Hot Wheels Unleashed is a bit of a learning curve. The next is boosting, which you can learn more about here. In either case, learning how to drift is one of the two real keys to victory. ![]() ![]() The tracks in Hot Wheels Unleashed mostly consist of lots of serpentine sections, featuring turns that can be both wide and smooth, and also sharp and tight.
